When we were approached to create a bespoke kitchen in Thaxted, it was clear from the start that this project would be something truly special. Our clients weren’t just designing a kitchen; they were building their dream home from the ground up. Set within a characterful barn conversion, this ambitious project spanned over two years and saw every detail meticulously considered, from curated mood boards to functional, layered textures.
At the heart of their vision for a bespoke kitchen in Thaxted were two statement Liebherr fridges, which they’d set their sights on from the very beginning. These were more than appliances, as they were to become key architectural anchors in the space. Subtle up-lighting was planned beneath the freestanding larder and fridge units to create a soft, ambient glow. As an independent kitchen designer, our task was to seamlessly bring their ideas to life while ensuring that every inch of the kitchen was functional, beautiful and true to the original concept.
Working closely with the client’s mood boards, we began to shape a kitchen that reflected their bold taste and design confidence. The palette centred around Paen Black and Rectory Red by Farrow & Ball. Two striking tones that brought drama and warmth into the space.
The clients were keen for each part of the kitchen to feel like its own design moment. From the dark wood-stained interiors to the carefully selected exterior shades, every detail was refined and intentional. A key design feature was the use of acoustic panelling around the freestanding larders, giving the impression of floating islands, each one serving a specific function while maintaining a visual connection to the wider space.
As specialists in handmade kitchens in Essex, we loved the challenge of transforming our client’s carefully planned ideas into a tactile, functional and beautiful environment. In addition to the kitchen, we also created bespoke wardrobes and utility cupboards, ensuring the same level of craftsmanship ran throughout the home.
Every cabinet, panel, and larder unit in this bespoke kitchen in Thaxted was made and hand-painted in our own workshop, based right here in Great Yeldham. This is the beauty of working with a team that handles everything under one roof-you get total consistency and a process that’s as smooth as the finish on your cabinetry.
This barn conversion into a bespoke kitchen in Thaxted came with its own set of complexities. The site was active for much of the design phase, and we were often navigating our way around builders, muddy grounds, and tight timelines. The client ultimately brought in two kitchen companies in Essex to combine specific elements from both wish lists, but it was our bespoke larders, hand-finished interiors and painted panelling that set the tone and character of the final kitchen.
We worked closely with BK Sargeant Builders, collaborating to ensure each phase flowed perfectly into the next. Precision and patience were key.
The final result is a stunning, textural space that feels as much a piece of art as it does a working kitchen. Each larder has its own purpose and personality, with thoughtful touches that elevate both form and function. Whether it’s a breakfast station, hidden storage, or pantry, the flow works effortlessly.
Interior staining, acoustic panelling, floating cabinetry, and layered lighting come together to form a kitchen that’s rich in detail and atmosphere. It’s a shining example of what a bespoke kitchen in Thaxted can become when vision, patience, and craftsmanship align.
For our clients, this bespoke kitchen in Thaxted was always going to be the centrepiece of their new home. Watching the transformation unfold, from walking around a muddy barn site to unveiling a high-spec, multi-functional kitchen, was an experience we’ll never forget.
They’ve told us many times how the kitchen now sets the tone for the entire house. For us, being part of that journey, bringing together design ambition with handmade quality, is why we do what we do.
